How to Raise Seed Funding in India: A Founder's Playbook (2026)
Raising a seed round in India in 2026 looks very different from even three years ago. Capital is more disciplined, diligence is deeper, and founders are expected to walk into the first meeting with sharper unit economics than ever before.
1. Know what a seed round actually funds
A seed round is not a milestone — it is fuel to reach the next one. Most Indian seed rounds today are ₹2–8 crore, priced between ₹15–40 crore post-money, and are expected to give founders 12–18 months of runway to prove one clear insight: that the wedge product has real, repeatable pull.
2. Build the smallest possible proof
Before approaching investors, isolate the single number that proves your thesis — weekly active users, paid conversion, retention curve, gross margin. Everything in your deck should ladder up to defending that one metric.
3. Map your investor list before writing the deck
Segment investors into three tiers: dream leads, credible co-investors, and strategic angels. Aim for 40–60 conversations. Warm intros still convert 5–10x better than cold outreach, so invest a week in mapping second-degree connections on LinkedIn.
4. Run the process on a clock
The best rounds close in 6–10 weeks. Open with your weakest-fit funds to sharpen the narrative, then move to top-of-list within two weeks. Momentum is the single biggest predictor of a clean close.
5. Negotiate for the round after this one
Optimise for a clean cap table, standard SAFE or CCPS terms, and a lead who will show up in the Series A. A slightly lower valuation with the right partner is almost always the better trade.
